Witnessing Giants

Each winter, whales return to the waters of Baja California to breed, give birth, and prepare their calves for the long migration north. Across calm lagoons and the rougher open Pacific, these encounters revealed both the scale and tenderness of one of the ocean’s largest animals. The series follows moments of movement and connection — breaching humpback whales disappearing back into the sea, solitary fins cutting through morning light, and the quiet bond between a newborn grey whale calf and its mother. In several photographs, a calf only days old is guided gently upward as its mother dives beneath it, helping it surface to breathe for the first time in the open ocean. Photographed across changing weather and shifting waters, the project explores not only the power of these animals, but the fragile environments they depend on. And then of course there's some dolphins. And Sea Lions. Because they like to be photographed.
